Unexpected Grace

So he came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon. A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, 'Give me a drink.' (John 4:3-7)

This is one of my favorite Gospel stories. Jesus breaking yet more taboos by asking a Samaritan (!) woman (!) of questionable repute (!) to draw him some water (!). And when he asks, it begins a conversation that changes her life. Rather than just giving him water, she engages him in conversation and he reveals his identity to her, and offers himself -- living water -- to her. To her, an outsider even among her own people.

(Upon entering this church, God may call you, but certainly not on your cell phone. THANK YOU!)

We found this sign at the entrance to a church in Nice. I love it so much.

Whoever you are, wherever you are, God may be calling you. God is calling you. How are we listening for that call? It may come in the form of a thirsty man asking for water, or a hungry woman asking for food. It may come in the form of a friend, or a stranger. The woman at the well likely didn't have extra time and energy to spend drawing an extra bucket of water for Jesus, but when she did it she was filled with springs of living water that never dry up.

As we go about our regular business today, whatever it may be, may we be listening for the ways God is calling us into a fuller life. Not a busier life, but one that is more whole. Be open to grace.
