"But let justice roll down like waters,
and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream."
Amos 5:24
I took this picture last year - it is Gullfoss, in Iceland. I have better pictures of the rainbow that appeared over it as we were walking back to the car, but this one better shows the power of the water.
This morning I listened to Dr. William Barber's sermon from last Sunday at the National Cathedral. It was powerful and convicting and well worth 45 minutes of your time. The central image was the river of righteousness, reshaping reality. "America, accepting death is not an option anymore" was the refrain. Throughout our history, we have accepted deaths that should not have been accepted. For too long we have dammed up justice and righteousness, and it is time to let them loose, so that we all might live.
Thank you, Dr. Barber, for the reminder that justice and righteousness are meant to flow freely, powerfully, like a mighty river. My prayer is that I may do my part to dismantle the dams we have constructed, so that their life-giving power may flow unimpeded.
