Sabbath

When you're not working, a day of rest can seem unnecessary or even decadent. But Sabbath is not just for the body; it is for the mind and the spirit. Sabbath is a mini-Lent. A time to re-center ourselves in the beautiful, endlessly creative love of God. In a new place, I am able to see with fresh eyes every day. Back home, the old routines and habits slowly creep back in. Too much screen time. Too much worry about what I cannot control. Too much pointless puttering. Not enough contemplation and reflection. Not enough tending to relationships.

So for today, a prayer for Saturdays from the Book of Common Prayer: "Almighty God, who after the creation of the world rested from all your works and sanctified a day of rest for all your creatures: Grant that we, putting away all earthly anxieties, may be duly prepared for the service of your sanctuary, and that our rest here upon earth may be a preparation for the eternal rest promised to your people in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."

And here's one of my favorite ways to put away all earthly anxieties. Nature. Blessed sabbath, all. May we all find a little heaven on earth today.
