I looked down and thought "hearts broken open." Not sure about you, but my heart is broken these days. There is so much pain in the world it feels overwhelming. And that is where evil wants us - feeling overwhelmed. Overwhelmed, powerless, hopeless. One of our responses is to close ourselves off. To put a shell around our hearts so that no more pain can get in.
Problem is, the shell doesn't just keep the pain out. It keeps the love in. God's love, that wants to pour into the world and help heal the hurts. God wants the shells around our hearts to be broken open so love can flow out.
Evil wants us to think the problems are so big there is nothing we can do. Love tells us every act of kindness is a flaming arrow. If it hits its mark, it can burn down the walls of hate. Every word of love is a drop of water, eroding the hardness of stone hearts.
So do not despair if your heart is broken. The pain is God's pain, breaking us open to be instruments of God's love. May we find beauty in it.
